We have been learning all about the first Thanksgiving as part of our social studies unit. We have also been busy learning our poems and songs for our Thanksgiving Feast. We are very excited to perform for our families.

What are you thankful for?

I have been reading a fun book called Do Penguins Have Knees. The book answers some very interesting and strange questions that people ask. Do you think penguins have knees?

What do you wonder about? Can you do some research to find an answer to your question?

This week we learned about fantasy and realism. We learned that some stories tell about things that could not happen in real life. These are fantasy stories. We learned that some stories tell about things that could happen in real life. These are realistic stories.

Realism: We went to the pumpkin patch and picked some vegetables and went on a wagon ride.

Fantasy: We went to the pumpkin patch and saw flying pumpkins and listened to a talking scarecrow.

Can you write a realistic or fantasy sentence about your visit to the pumpkin patch?

Plants 10/12/2009

We are so excited to be working on our first science unit on plants. We have spent some time learning about what plants need to grow. We have also had fun exploring the different parts of the plant: the roots, stem, leaves, flowers and seeds. We learned that fruits form from flowers and contain the seeds of the plant. We were surprised to learn that many of the vegetables we eat are actually the roots of the plant.

What part of the plant do you think the potato is?

Cause and Effect 10/06/2009

Today we read a story called Charles Tiger. We learned about cause and effect.  We learned that cause is telling why an event happened. Effect is telling what happened.

Effect: Charles Tiger was scared.

Cause: A spider scared him.

Can you give an example of cause and effect?

Apple Day 10/04/2009

This Friday we had Apple Day in class. We read a lot of books about apples as part of our science unit on plants. We learned that apples form from  apple blossoms and that the seeds of the apples are contained in the core. We tasted a variety of apples such as Gala, Fuji, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. We used our five senses to explore the different varieties. Then we did a tally mark chart to find out that Granny Smith was the most popular apple in our class. We used describing words to write about apples and used apples as stamps to create beautiful art. We also tasted different apple products such as apple juice, apple chips, apple sauce and pieces of apple. We created a graph and discovered that most people liked apple juice but less people liked apple sauce. At the end of the day we watched a movie about Johnny Appleseed and learned how apples became so popular in the United States. We had so much fun on Apple Day!

What did you learn about apples?

We Love Learning 09/23/2009

We are learning many things in first grade. We have become expert number detectives as we review our numbers from 1 to 10. We love doing math especially when our teacher makes our math page magically appears on the big screen! We are excited to have jobs to help take care of our classroom. We were so excited to get our anthologies and begin reading the first story. We love learning in first grade!

Greetings from Room 4! The first day of First Grade was a great success.  We were excellent  listeners as we read stories about being in First Grade. We learned that graphs are an easy way to organize information. From our graph we learned that most of the students went to school by car.  We discovered that we are really good printers. We took a grand tour of the school. On the way we peeked at the new library and computer lab. It was a really busy day in Room 4 and we can't wait to find out what will happen next!

I am so excited to meet with all of you on the first day of school. We are going to have a wonderful year.

What  you think you will learn in first grade?
